Bangladesh’s Garment Industry and Its Global Brand Reach

Bangladesh’s ready made garment (RMG) sector is the country’s largest manufacturing industry and one of the world’s top two apparel exporters, behind only China.
Export Scale and Destinations
Bangladesh supplies garments to over 160 countries, Key markets include:
1. United States
2. European Union
3. UK, Canada, Japan, Australia and emerging markets
Brand and Retailer Connections
While Bangladesh does not have a single “export brand” in the consumer sense, its factories supply many of the world’s leading fashion and retail brands. International retailers such as H&M, Walmart, Zara, and outdoor brands like Rab and Lowe Alpine source significant volumes from Bangladeshi suppliers. These brands often manage their own supply chains, but Bangladesh’s competitive costs, compliance improvements, and expanded capacity have made it a preferred sourcing hub.
Thousands of foreign buyer companies and brands purchase ready-made garments from Bangladesh. Among them, the top ten account for nearly 29 per cent of the exported ready-made garments. Sweden’s multinational retail company H&M leads the list of buyers, followed by Spain’s Inditex and Ireland’s Primark in second and third places respectively.
After H&M, Inditex, and Primark, the remaining buyers in the top ten list include Bestseller from Denmark, Marks & Spencer from the UK, C&A from the Netherlands, Uniqlo from Japan, LPP from Poland, Next from the UK, and Pepco from Poland. One of the world’s largest buyers, Walmart emphasized that Bangladesh has been a crucial supplier of Walmart for many years and the strategy for purchasing garments from Bangladesh remains unchanged.
